The Atwood Family DNA project is open to every male with any variant of the surname Atwood (including Attwood, Wood, etc). Y-DNA tests are currently available for 12, 37, 67 or 111 markers. The 37-marker test is a good start in identifying close matches, and can be upgraded to more markers at a later date without having to retest. The cheaper 12-marker test is too generic to give a good estimate of generations back to a common ancestor.
Y-DNA is passed down the paternal line (father, father's father, father's father's father, and so on back in time for thousands of years) and is an excellent way to detect males from the same family line. You must be male to take this test. If you believe there is an Atwood (or other variant) in your direct male line, although you have a different surname, you are also welcome to participate. Females are also welcome to join the Project and are encouraged to ask a male Atwood family member to participate.
If you have taken an mtDNA test or Family Finder test and Atwood (or other variant) is anywhere in your direct pedigree line, you are also welcome to participate.
