Appalachian Y-DNA Project

About us

This project is for Y-DNA (paternal line) testers only, and specifically for those whose families have roots in the mountains, hollars, and foothills of Appalachia. A companion project, the Appalachian mtDNA Project, https://www.familytreedna.com/groups/appalachianmtdnaproject/about, covers mitochondrial (maternal) lines.

The former Cumberland Gap DNA Project has been renamed and expanded. The Appalachian project hopes to build on the existing excellent work and data, together with your participation as testers, moving forward.

How You Can Help

  • Add your WikiTree ID at Family Tree DNA > Account Settings > Genealogy > Family Tree > Manage Your WikiTree Connection.

  • Add the Earliest Known Ancestor for your patrilineal line of fathers on the Earliest Known Ancestors tab in the same section of your account settings.

  • Join the WikiTree (Genealogy) Appalachia Project (must be an active WikiTree member for 30 days): https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Appalachia

A Note on Communication

Because of the size of this project, your volunteer Group Project Administrators will not be sending individual emails. We will update information and work through the data as consistently and promptly as the project's size allows.
