Barbara M Barbara M has a question!

I am the administrator for my mother's DNA. She is listed as Barbara M. Her mtDNA results are available, but the autosomal results have not come through yet. My name is Diane. My maternal great-grandmother was named Helena Bulle. She was born approximately in 1886, possibly in Metz. She emigrated to the United States in 1904. She married Friederick Fleiner, from Stuttgart, Germany, and had two children, a son Albert born in 1905, and my grandmother, Matilda Fleiner, born August 5, 1908 in Newark, NJ. Friederick died shortly before Matilda's birth. After two years, Helena married Ernest Fix, also from Germany, and together they had a daughter, Clara. Helena died in the great influenza epidemic in February, 1920. My grandmother was 11 years old. Although we have found a lot of records for the Fleiner family in Germany, we have found nothing whatsoever on Helena Bulle. My grandmother was young when her mother died, and knew only a few things about her. She was not even sure of the spelling of her last name. Her mother had said she was from Metz, although perhaps she only lived near Metz. She believed her mother may have been a Roman Catholic, but this information is suspect. She married two German men, raised her children in the Protestant faith, and United States census records for 1910 noted that she was German, and spoke German, She had told my grandmother that she could speak 11 languages. I believe that she must have identified more as German than French. Her haplogroup is H6A1B4. I am not able to speak French or German. I went on a website for genealogy for the Metz-Moselle area. I was at a loss. If anybody has any advice they would like to offer as to how to find information on Helena Bulle, I would greatly appreciate it. I am new to the group. Thank you! Diane

My grandmother was born in Metz, and I took a trip there to the archive. Found my grandmother, and her family. Metz's archives are not online, Strasbourg is, maybe by now Metz is as well. They are very helpful there, and have a residence registry by last name of everyone who lived there in the 1800's. I suggest you make a trip, it was worthwhile for me. You may have to travel to other towns in Europe, because after 1871 a lot of Germans moved to Metz and Alsace/Lorraine. My ancestors were one of them. The Metz registry lists places of birth, and everyone in a household and their town of birth.

Thank you for answering my query. I would love to go to Europe and do the research myself. Perhaps I can do that in the future. Since writing this post, I discovered more information about my great-grandmother from her marriage records. Her name was actually Maximiliana Boll, and her parents were named Conrad Boll and Anna Schroff. Maximiliana left Europe in 1904 for America, and renamed herself Helena or Helen. The Atlantic crossing record said she was living in Pirmasens, Germany (not far from Alsace-Lorraine), that she left out of Rotterdam, and she was coming here to marry her future husband from Stuttgart, Germany. I haven't been able to find anything in the German records, so perhaps she was indeed born in Metz, and was just working or visiting in Germany. Questions answered and new questions to ponder. I really appreciate your input.

Due to further genealogical research the most distant ancestor for 172132 has moved back a generation to Frédérique Spengler and moved from Guebwiller, Alsace to Bitche, Moselle, Lorraine.

I tried to look at Alsace Lorraine church records from the link here. I couldn't get the English translator to work. Has anyone tried it?
