About us

The Affleck Surname DNA Project was established at Family Tree DNA in February 2012  and assist all Affleck genealogical efforts.

All males carry that same y-chromosome that their most distant paternal ancestor passed down to his son(s). Through DNA testing, this project identifies your paternal ansectors' Y-chromosome within you ... and that you will also pass on to generations of Affleck males to come. From a genealogical perspective many, many families spread throughout the world may have identical DNA, hence indicating a level of 'relatedness'

The DNA Project is designed to establish the Y-chromosome STR haplotype of any Affleck genealogical lineage found in any location of the world. With the use of a simple and relatively inexpensive DNA test we can compare each Affleck lineage or individual tested and determine if they share a common biological ancestor with other Affleck lineages already tested, within the time-frame of the common use of surnames.

It would be very meaningful for a male, bearing the Affleck surname at birth, to establish the Y-chromosome DNA haplotype for his Affleck lineage. This would give him, this modern day patriarch, the opportunity to compare his Affleck lineage DNA, now and at any time in the future, to other Afflecks in the Affleck Surname Haplotype Database and arrive at the conclusion as to which, if any, he is most likely to share a common ancestor. It would also be a legacy for his family for generations to come in the event the male heirs of his lineage should die out.

The Affleck Surname DNA Project is a new initiative for Affleck genealogical effort. The Affleck Surname DNA Team are actively approaching Affleck males to participate in this ground breaking global endeavor. In time and with the addition of more participants, the Affleck Surname DNA haplotype database will expand and hopefully represent most if, not all of the distinct Affleck lineages from around the world. It is the goal of this project to eventually be able to easily match any Affleck, DNA tested, to a particular Affleck lineage or DNA grouping that has with a documented genealogical history.

Because we test STR markers only on the Y-chromosome, all participants must be males, bearing the Affleck surname at birth.

If you are a female with Affleck ancestry and you wish to establish the Y-chromosome DNA haplotype for your Affleck lineage, you will need to locate an Affleck male, bearing the surname of your Affleck lineage and convince him to provide the required DNA sample. This could be your grandfather, father, brother, uncle, nephew or male cousin. All the Affleck males in your direct Affleck lineage will have the same Y-chromosome marker values, with the exception of expected occasional mutations.

Identifying a well documented genealogy for each Affleck lineage found in a specific geography has been our first priority. The Research Team at the Affleck Surname DNA Project have made an initial selection of Affleck lineages from the Public Member Trees at Ancestry.com. These lineages have been initially selected on the basis of their geographic location within Scotland and diversity of migration. Each lineage reflects only the pedigree of male Afflecks, and where there are living Affleck males potentially available to participate in the Affleck Surname DNA Project. As participants submit their paternal lineages we will build a wider picture of the global Affleck family. We welcome all Affleck’s to submit their lineage to this project.

Once the genealogical details have been fully documented and recorded, a concentrated effort will be made to identify a living male descendant, bearing the Affleck surname at birth from this particular Affleck lineage, who will be willing to participate in the Y-chromosome DNA testing.

We are looking for global networking groups, genealogy networks as well as your informal family networks to communicate this need for global participation. We invite all Afflecks with an interest in their family name to become involved.
