This project is open to anyone with indigenous Y-DNA lineage traced to Mexico or parts of the southwestern United States that were historically part of Mexico, including Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Arizona, Nevada, California. The project defines indigenous Y-DNA lineages as those belonging to certain subclades of Y-DNA Haplogroups Q and C which are thought to be native to the Americas.

It began in the 9th century as the County of Castile, an eastern frontier lordship of the Kingdom of León. During the 10th century its counts increased their autonomy, but it was not until 1065 that it was separated from León and became a kingdom in its own right. Between 1072 and 1157 it was again united with León, and after 1230 this union became permanent. Throughout this period the Castilian kings made extensive conquests in southern Iberia at the expense of the Islamic principalities. Castile and León, with their southern acquisitions, came to be known collectively as the Crown of Castile, a term that also came to encompass overseas expansion.

It is understood that it was the custom in Colonial Spanish America to pass along a surname that may have come from the maternal side. With this in mind, with DNA it is possible to see relationships between people of different Surnames which would extend back to rather small gene pool some 400 years ago just after the first Conquest of New Mexico by Juan de Onate in 1598.
