Project Background: | The Pontius Family DNA Project was founded by a group of Pontius/Punches family genealogists who found their research into family history blocked by missing ancestor parents. |
Project Goals: | The main Pontius families become lost about 1570 AD for those whom we know were in Germany. Some American lines are lost in the 1700's and 1800's. We hope to be able to join these lost lines to earlier ones by genetic testing. We seek to identify family members; determine areas for further research; prove or disprove current theories about the family lines; validate existing family lines and research and to try to fill in the blanks where ancestors are missing. |
Project News: With 12 members tested for at least 12 markers, we now have six genetic families represented. The haplogroups are E3b, G, G2, I1a and R1b1.
The project has its first female member. She joined and ordered an mtDNA kit. We will have to see more female test results before we can interpret the mtDNA results and try to blend them into the Y-chromosome test results. Her kit number is 57334.
The project has also acquired two more male members for a total of 12 males and one female. One new member is a second Johannes descendant and the other is a second Peter descendant. All results will be posted as they become available.
We are in possession of both Johannes and Nicholas lines DNA data which strongly suggests that Pontius progentitors Nicholas and Johannes Pontius of Pennsylvania, after 1738, were NOT in fact brothers.
We are still seeking more study members because we don't know if the data we are seeing is indicative of the real situation between the Johannes and Nicholas lines. If you would be interested in participating or know someone with one of the above surnames or a variant of them -- especially someone who doesn't know who their Pontius relatives may be -- please speak to them about our dna study or guide them to this website.
For further information, please go to www.pontiusgenealogy.com |
Project Results: After the first set of results were returned, we knew we had to broaden our database and other variants of the surname were added. The six original participants in the study represented three separate lineages without a common ancestor in the last 600 to 1600 years.
The 12 marker tests have defined the genetic lineages found.
Kit #42019 belongs to Haplogroup "I". The value of 22 at allele 390 indicates this is an Anglo-Saxon line. If the value had been 23, it would have indicated a Danish or Viking line. A Deep SNP test has shown that this member is in fact "I1a".
Kits #42698, N4369, 58266, 50736 and 75027 belong to Haplogroup "E3b". This is a genetic lineage said to be common to the Romans. It will be noticed that kits 42698, N4369 and 58266 belong to the Nicholas Line and kits 50736 and 75027 belong to the Johannes Line. While the two lines are related, their connection may lie about 13 to 14 generations in the past and not 6 or 7 generations as many people have assumed. We need more members from the Johannes Lines in order to resolve the question because one Johannes member exactly matches the Nicholas members in their dna sequences and one does not.
Kits #42031, 42205 and 42262 are of Haplogroup "G2". Kit number 54975 is also of the G haplogroup but is not known to be of the G2 subclade. The "G" genetic line is common in Germany.
Since kit #54975 has several markers different from the G2 members, it may be that this person belongs to another G subclade.
Our 10th member, kit #70257, has tested as haplogroup R1b1.
Our Punches member, kit # 73667, has had his 25 markers returned and he is an exact match with kit # 42019.
We now have six genetic families in five haplogroups. |
DNA Test Results (Alleles) for Project Members * Haplogroups in green have been
confirmed by SNP testing. Haplogroups in red have
been predicted by Family Tree DNA based on unambiguous results in the
individual's personal page. This has been placed on this GAP page for your ease
and convenience. Please note that for any predicted results we see no reason for
ordering a SNP test to confirm the Haplogroup. if a – is in the HAPLO field then
we feel that the comparative results are not clear and unambiguous and if the
kit holder wants to know their SNP with 100% confidence they may consider
ordering a SNP confirmation test.
