Notes on Project History

Up through May 2018, the Harley, Hurley, and Herlihy (herein abbreviated "the Hurley project" going forward) project was passively managed at World Families for many years. In 2018 an active project administrator signed on. Hosting and management were shifted from World Families to FTDNA. An external website for the project was launched by the new administrator at that time.

The decision was made in May 2018 to take all results private so as to eliminate any then and future issues with privacy laws. Any detailed STR analysis on our external website is present there because those testers have given their explicit written permission to utilize their genetic data.

The project is now slowly integrating Y SNP analysis with Y STR analysis and documenting its findings on our project website.

Surname History

Harley has multiple origins in England but were particularly concentrated in Shropshire, Yorkshire, Kircaldy, and Perth. There is also an Irish Harley surname, concentrated around Donegal.

Herlihy is an Irish name that eventually concentrated around northwest County Cork.

There are two septs of Hurley documented in the literature. The name is sometimes interchanged with Herlihy.

Our external project website contains more details.

Resources

If you are new to DNA testing, there is an extensive DNA Testing Q & A on our project website.

Our FAQ page contains information on project eligibility and administration policies as well as written and illustrated instructions for setting up your FTDNA account, creating a family tree, etc.

There are three items project members should immediately be aware of: 1) account profile setup; 2) difference between the FTDNA website (where you are now) and the project website (not FTDNA); 3) differences in participation levels.

For the latter, the more you actively participate, the more information I might be able to provide on our project website.

Our Code of Conduct page describes privacy policies and information.

Project Administrator

Feel free to contact Susan at hurleydna@earthlink.net after reviewing these materials if you have any questions. Put HURLEY PROJECT in the subject line of your email otherwise it will probably not get seen.

Your project administrator has two lineages of west Cork Hurley in her own pedigree and continues to struggle researching them.
