Background

The Frady Y-DNA Research Project serves, in part, as an expansion of the work performed by numerous dedicated Frady surname researchers who, over many years, utilized the traditional tools available to genealogist. As a result of their work, much knowledge was obtained and many questions answered. Yet, some of the hypotheses previously developed - regarding family connections and geographic origins - could not be conclusively proven. The reality is, in many genealogical cases, the paper trail is limited, nonexistent, or effectively runs out at varying points in history. Additionally, anecdotal stories passed down over time can become distorted and/or lack specificity.

It is hoped that DNA testing can provide information and clues not obtainable from traditional genealogy methods. Also, that DNA testing can serve to buttress the existing paper trail information or, possibly, disprove existing theories that seem probable but cannot be adequately supported by the available paper documentation.

Although testing to this point has been limited, some of the questions The Frady Y-DNA Research Project has thus far attempted to address are:

~ Are all Frady surname males who were born in the United States descendants of Charles Frady, who was born about 1760 and is known to have lived in Virginia around 1787?
Based on the DNA profile (click on “Y-DNA Results”) established through the testing for some of Charles known living descendants, we now know the answer to this question is no. (Research continues to better understand why some Frady males do not match the known DNA signature of Charles.)

~ Are the Frady (same spelling) males native to France genetic relatives of the Frady’s native to the USA?
Although the project has only tested one male born and living in France, at this time, it appears the answer is no.

~ Is there a genetic connection between the German family surnamed Wrede and the American Frady family?
One test of a US Wrede male, with well documented roots to Germany, has been conducted. He did not prove to be a match with any tested Frady male.

~ Is it possible to better understand the ancient origins of Frady males by enhanced, “deep clade,” testing?
Yes! Please refer to the “Results” section.

In the continuing effort to better understand our family roots, these and other questions must be addressed. If you are a Frady male, I encourage you to join the project. Get tested and help us find more answers. Plus, you'll learn in greater detail where you fit into the Frady story.
