Staton Statten Y DNA

About us

Administered by Darrell Stanley. All direct male descendants of a suspected Staton heritage, regardless of adoption of other surnames, are welcome to JOIN their results here. Since this site does not display full names, the data you enter for the oldest suspected (Earliest Ancestral Name) male ancestor is quite important. A casual interest is not accepted as a reason for membership, since the results are publicly available through any search engine.  This Project was "orphaned" years ago, but it was adopted by Clinton Slayton because the similarity of the surnames suggested a possible clerical confusion resulting in Slatons recorded as Statons and vice versa. Clinton's background of over 30 years of genealogical research predates the availability of DNA testing and informs his attitude about what DNA testing can and cannot provide.

Over time, groupings by haplo match will mean that meaningful Earliest Ancestral Names will provide valuable clues to possible lineage in combination with traditional genealogy (and autosomal DNA when available).

Only direct male-to-male descendants are displayed in this Project. Females can sponsor a male-to-male result which will display on our grid, and should notify us of this before they request to JOIN. If a request to JOIN comes from someone with only mtDNA related to Statons, they can be allowed membership because all results that are not yDNA have been filtered from this site. What is not wanted are the yDNA results of casually-interested men with no probable connection to Staton men.

Our surname of interest is all reasonable variants of Staton. The following spelling variations are also included in this project: Stadin, Stayden, Staton, Staten, Stayton. At this time, Statham and Statum do not appear to be related surnames. At this time, the theory that this name is a derivation of corruption of Staunton/Stanton does not have enough evidential weight, but perhaps when pools become larger, this might bear a closer look. At this time, the surname GORDON is showing a high number of Y matches with one group or our Staton males.

We are looking for additional participants. Individuals interested in collaborating on family history and using genetic testing to assist our research efforts are encouraged to join. We especially recommend the Big Y version, and any prospective can ask the admins for possible financial assistance from the General Fund

Contact Darrell with any questions. If you have YDNA results at Ancestry and/or FamilyTreeDNA and you are not a likely or suspected direct male descendant or member of a family who used this name, please do not ask to join. Since this is a free public site, anyone can see the kit results, and we wish to restrict this Project GRID to only variants of this surname or known adoptions.

Were you yDNA-tested at another company? Transfer your results to FTDNA to join this project, but be advised that this procedure has not always resulted in successful showings on the grid, you may have to light a fire under someone at FTDNA.

If your scores were obtained elsewhere than Family Tree DNA, your scores may look different to our grid; FTDNA has to convert values while entering results from Relative Genetics, this is the result  of the changing "standards" established by Ancestry after taking over Relative Genetics, particularly DYS452 and Y-GATA-H4/4.1. Many users do not understand this when transferring their DNA results from one site to another, as several values have changed since 2009. If you tested yDNA elsewhere, please consider retesting at Family Tree DNA at 37, 67 or 111 markers

Members might be asked have results posted on other selected websites, such as YSearch.org and Haplogroup and Geographic Projects, because the support of the wider DNA community is part and parcel of this project. Living contributors or sponsors must have e-mail addresses or contact information available to the administrator; if you do not agree, do not ask to JOIN. Please look at the existing grid for hints as to how to name your Most Distant ancestor, these should be consistent. I may ask members to alter these for a consistent presentation.

At this time, LONG FORM ISOGG hierarchical SNP values do not show on FTDNA.
