About us

This project was initiated primarily to help sort out the numerous branches of the LAYTON (Laton, Leighton, etc) family that existed in NORFOLK, England, during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Are the branches related, with common ancestors, or are they quite separate genetically? Having solved some Norfolk mysteries, our ambition is now to widen the scope to include families that originated in other parts of Britain. The Layton surname may have derived from several village place names in different parts of England, Wales & Scotland[e.g. East & West La(y)ton in North Yorkshire; Layton in Durham & Lancashire; Leighton in Shropshire, Powys & Somerset; even Leiston in Suffolk]. It is known that at least one family of Latons migrated from the Yorkshire villages to Norwich in the 17th century and many other such movements have clearly taken place. Unfortunately, families who adopted the same place name (often during the Middle Ages) were not necessarily related by blood, so that their DNA profiles could be completely different.
