Background

This project deals with a sub-group of the haplogroup called I which is known at the present time as I2a2b. The subclade of this Y-DNA haplogroup has been previously known as I(x), I1b2*, I2b* and I2b2. It can be defined by using SNP shorthand as L38+.

Haplogroup I-L38 was first described in May 2005 on the Genealogy-DNA list at Rootsweb.com. This consisted of several conversations between Bonnie Schrack and Ken Nordtvedt. Later they were joined by Glen Todd.

I2a2b can be typified as belonging to the I group but having DYS455 = 10 or 11, DYS454 = 12, and 19-19 at YCA as modal values. In the past years a possibility of a further sub-division based on the value DYS448 was explored. The problem is that a larger sample is needed to make a proper determination.

Looking at the surnames in the spreadsheet it quickly becomes evident that the group appears to peak in Germany and England. Once again the rarity of the group in the sampled population makes conclusions impossible at this point.

Haplogroup I-L38 is sometimes nicknamed as the "Lichtenstein-haplogroup" because in the Lichtenstein Cave, in the German Hartz mountains, 3000 year old bones were found that were typed as I2a2b.

Hans De Beule has set up a page with his papers written on his theories about "The Layered History of I-L38" (https://sites.google.com/site/haplogroupil38/summary)
