Project Background

The Hungarian SIG DNA Project is an official project of JewishGen's Hungarian Special Interest Group (H-SIG). This project promotes genealogical DNA testing among people with Jewish ancestry from the geographical region that H-SIG covers.

H-SIG concentrates on the area known as Pre-Trianon Hungary and covers areas that were primarily Hungarian speaking.
  • Republic of Hungary
  • Slovak Republic
  • Subcarpathian Ruthenia (Ukraine)
    • Zakarpatskaya Oblast
    • Carpaten
  • Transylvania Region (Romania)
    • Erderly
    • Sibenbergen
  • Maramaros Megye
    • Maramures County (Romania)
  • Banat Region (Romania)
  • Burgenland (Austria)
  • Serbia
  • Croatia
  • Slovenia

Participation Requirements:
  1. You should have confirmed Jewish ancestry from the geographic region described above, on your matrilineal or patrilineal line. This project is not intended for people who have suspected Jewish ancestry or whose ancestors were from other regions of Eastern Europe. Those who do not qualify for this project are encouraged to visit JewishGen's Genealogy by Genetics website at http://www.jewishgen.org/dna/ for other Jewish DNA projects, or Family Tree DNA's main website for a comprehensive list of Family Tree DNA projects.

  2. We recommend a minimum of 37 markers for paternal lines and mtDNAPlus (HVR1+HVR2) for maternal lines for the best results of this study. However, all qualifying individuals are welcome to participate with any test you can (or are willing to) afford. Those who start with lower level tests will have an opportunity to purchase upgrades later.

  3. After your results are in...

    • Please specify your earliest known patrilineal and/or matrilineal ancestor(s) and the town they were from under the User Preferences tab of your myFTDNA webpage.
    • Follow the instructions on your User Preferences page to specify the town of origin by latitude/longitude. This will mark your town on the member distribution map below.
    • Upload a GEDCOM showing your qualifying patrilineal and/or matrilineal ancestry to your myFTDNA webpage.

If you have never purchased a Family Tree DNA or Genographic Project test kit, please use the link below to purchase a Family Tree DNA kit and join the Hungarian SIG DNA Project.

Which Test Should I Order?
Men can order patrilineal (Y-DNA) and/or matrilineal (mtDNA) tests for themselves. Women can order only matrilineal tests for themselves, but they can also recruit male family members whose patrilineal ancestry they are interested in and order a Y-DNA test for them.

Matrilineal = Your mother's mother's mother's mother's mother, etc.

Patrilineal = Your father's father's father's father's father, etc.

How Many Markers?
The more markers you test, the more recently related your matches will be. We recommend a minimum of 37 markers for Y-DNA testing and mtDNAPlus (HVR1+HVR2) for mtDNA testing for the best results of this study. However, all qualifying individuals are welcome to participate with any test you can (or are willing to) afford. Those who start with lower level tests will have an opportunity to purchase upgrades later.

For Y-DNA, if you match a person with a different surname as you at only 12 markers, your connection to that person may be well over 1000 years ago, well before reasonable genealogical timeframes. However, a match at 37 markers or more generally indicates a relationship within the past few hundred years.

For mtDNA, the basic mtDNA test (HVR1) will result in matches who are related within 52 generations, while the mtDNAPlus test (HVR1+HVR2) will result in matches who are related within 28 generations. The mtFullSequence test will result in matches that are related within hundreds of years, similar to the Y-DNA 37-marker test.
