Serious research on the Funkhouser family in America has been conducted for over a century yet the exact relationship of Jacob, John and Christian "Fankhauser", the first three Funkhouser pioneers in Virginia, remains shrouded in mystery. It is widely accepted that the earliest Fankhauser-Funkhouser immigrants were from the Fankhauser family that originated in the "Fankhausgraben" around the town of Trub in the Emmenthal Valley of Canton Bern. But the specific links to Switzerland are also still unknown.
