About us

December 18, 2023 :

Since our last update, there have been some significant changes of interest. We welcome many new members to the project.

In total, we now enjoy 160 total participants in our project.Of these, 111 are of the traditional Y-DNA male line surname members, while 48 of our members have evaluated their female ascendancy by participating in mtDNA testing. We’ve had 76 Family Finder tested, and 30 for the Big Y.

In our Surname Project Y-Results pages, there are a few options as to how to format the reporting of the data. We have chosen to ‘Group’ our members by Haplogroup, because this is the best opportunity for project members to see potentially closely related participants across the project. As a reminder, the use of surnames as a consistent way to trace genealogy is less than a thousand years old. The time frame which separates Haplogroups in y-DNA Chromosome definitions is in the thousands to tens of thousands of years. Therefore, individuals who are researching their genealogy through the use of DNA classifications need to look first for close matches within their own haplogroup. See the ‘Results’ section for more information on this relating to our project.
