Incredible news about the results of one of our project members who has taken the Big-Y test!

A study of Roman era decapitated skeletons buried in York (England) was published a few days ago, reported by many sources as the 'Headless Gladiators'.

Up until now, YDNA has only been extracted from just 9 Roman or Iron Age samples in the whole of Britain. Incredibly, one of our Whiffen DNA Project members shares a particular SNP (FGC22501) with one of these 9 men. ‘6DRIF-22’ is thought to have been a gladiator, who was likely to have been born in Wales approximately100-400 AD.

October 2011

The Whiffen DNA project has now been officially recognised by the Guild of One-name Studies, and you can see the official logo on the project page.

The results are now back for our newest members, and for another member who has upgraded to a 37 marker test. You can look at the results for yourself. So far there are six distinct groups – would you like to take part and see whether you match one of these existing groups, or perhaps you belong to a new branch?

August 2011

The administrator of the Whiffen DNA Project, Carol, has now been joined by Sally, who has become a co-administrator.
We have redesigned the project website, which now has a link to the Whiffing One-Name Study profile page.
Two new members have just joined the project, and another existing member has decided to upgrade to a 37 marker test - we are still eagerly awaiting all of the results.

Would you like to help us try to link up some of the different Whiffen family branches? As you can see from the results, we really need some more of you to participate.

If you have any queries, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

This project is still being developed - so watch this space for more news and developments!
