About us
This project seeks to connect Smeds / Smedts families who are historically-linked to the the area in and around the town of Närpes, in the Ostrobothnian/Österbotten region of northwestern Finland.
The focus is on those who bear the farm name/surname Smeds, Smedts, or one of the variants-- and who also know that they have a familial connection to the area in and around Närpes, Finland.
Women who are interested in their patrilineal Smeds line may also participate. A close male relative can be tested on their behalf, as their proxy. For women without a potential male proxy, we encourage you (and, in fact, everyone) to consider taking the Family Finder test. The FF test can be especially important for anyone whose ancestors are from the Närpes / Närpiö area. In requesting a DNA test kit from Family Tree DNA, mention that your kit result is for inclusion in the Smeds DNA study. After you are tested by Family Tree DNA, your results can easily be added to the study for comparison to the larger project group.
