About us

The first aim of the Project will be to determine to what extent holders of the name possess haplotypes classifiable as one of the above possible provenances. Once that is established, some of us will probably proceed to more detailed analyses that might shed further light on the nature of our common ancestry.

The three levels of DNA testing, 12, 37 or 67, simply refine the precision with which it's possible to say people are related. For Sankeys, the least expensive Y-DNA12 test is an excellent start because at FamilyTreeDNA they guarantee to determine haplotype for that; that costs extra with other companies. Some DNA features change rapidly, some more slowly. The haplotype groups those features which change the most slowly of all. Haplotype Q is rare enough in England that possessing the name Sankey and that haplotype tells us a great deal about Sankey ancestry and our relatedness. We can individually choose to upgrade to higher levels of precision later if that appears useful.
