About us

Initial tests show an I2b1 (formerly I1b2a) Continental 1 haplogroup, which is different from the R1a and R1b haplogroups normally found for Scottish clans. This haplogroup is thought to have originated in northern Germany, and may represent Picts or Danish Vikings in Scotland. For more information on I2b see the Family Tree DNA I2b site at http://www.familytreedna.com/public/M223-Y-Clan/default.aspx .
So far, the main differences between the McGugan family and the I2b1 Continental Haplotype are as follows:
A value of 9 for DYS 459a instead of 10
A value of 12 for DYS 460 instead of 11.

SNP testing results are M170+, M223+, M258+, P19+, P38+, M161-, M21-, M227-, M253-, M26-, M72-, P30-, P37.2-, M284-.

Big Y SNP results are I-M223, I-CTS616, I-CTS10057, I-Z161, I-L801, I-CTS6433, I-S2364, I-S2361, I-Y9161, I-Y17942

I-Y17942 has an estimated founding date of about 3080 years before present with a range of 1950 to 4700 years before present.

McGugan is very similar to the McGuigan name and so McGuigans are welcome to join this site. McGuigans are an Irish family in the R haplogroup which has a different origin than the I haplogroup.
