About us

After you or a direct descendant in your Leigh or Lee line have had your DNA tested, let me know so I can post your achievement in this section. Also, send me the name and vital statistics of your earliest known ancestor so I can list you as a descendant of so-and-so. Your real name will not be used. As you start getting matches, tell me about them so I can list them here. Contact me at ftdnahost (at) bergstedt (dot) org

09/11/2013: Several members are having their testing upgraded to 111 markers. Congratulations to them!

05/12/2011:
Welcome to the descendant of John Leigh (b. c1792). He was tested for 67 markers and has formed a new group. His kit # is 73261.

12/12/2010:
During the past year, quite a few HVR1 matches have been found with kit 114092. That kit has struck a gold mine of matches.

04/10/2010: Welcome to the descendant of Thomas Green Lee (b. 1858), who has a perfect match with Ralph Leigh for 25 markers. He has ordered testing with more markers. His kit # is N21375 and his ysearch ID is PZEDH.

04/07/2010:
Welcome to the descendant of Benjamin Lee (b. c1797, d. c1865), who has a genetic distance of 2 with Ralph Leigh. His kit # is 84402 and his ysearch ID is NC44G.

04/02/2010: Another distant cousin to the line of Ralph Leigh has been found. The donor has a different surname, and he lives in London, England. He has a genetic distance of 2 (37 markers) with Ralph Leigh.

02/01/2010: Kit 137392 has had his mtDNA tested. Because mtDNA traces the female line, it is unlikely his matches will carry over to the rest of us, but we hope these tests give him some good leads. Familytreedna sponsors a public database for mtDNA at http://www.MitoSearch.org

01/29/2010: An HVR1 match has been found between Kit 114092 and a person in the Family Tree mtDNA database. Matches of the mtDNA have more Anthropological significance as the time frame for a common ancestor could go beyond the Genealogical time frame. Congratulations, we hope this match will prove helpful in your research!

11/28/2009:
Welcome to the descendant of Claude Ellison Lee (b c1896, d 1949). He was tested for 67 markers and is our first member of the subgroup for Claude Ellison Lee. His kit # is 114092 and his ysearch ID is ZWRAB. Claude Ellison Lee, who was the grandfather of the donor, had several connections to the Spartanburg, SC area.

11/8/2009:
Welcome to the descendant of Henry Lee (b c1597, d c1657). He was tested for 67 markers and has a genetic distance of 3 with Ralph Leigh. His kit # is 137392 and his ysearch ID is H7AFZ. His Lee ancestors are believed to have migrated from Shropshire, England to Virginia, but this connection hasn't been proven. His ancestors migrated to North Carolina and then to Mississippi.

9/26/2009:
Through testing by FamilyTreeDNA, the following results have been obtained on the line of Ralph Leigh, b. c1560, d c1614, in Wales. Go to the Clearing House for Leigh & Lee Lines of the I-Haplogroup for details.
  • The 67 markers of Ralph Leigh have been identified (same as those of kit # 98072). Kits # 140184, 146628, and a distant cousin of a different surname assisted in identifying the markers of Ralph Leigh.
  • A close match has been discovered between the line of Ralph Leigh in Wales and the line of John Lee (d 1737) in the eastern United States. Kit # 141989 (ysearch ID 38DR7) provided this link. Go to the Clearing House for Leigh & Lee Lines of the I-Haplogroup for details. In addition, a number of other Lee men in the United States have a close match with the descendant of Ralph Leigh, but those men were tested by Ancestry, and they can not be members of this group unless they export their markers from Ancestry to FamilyTree (the import to FamilyTree is free) and request membership in this group.
  • A distant cousin to the line of Ralph Leigh but of a different surname has been located. The cousin lives in England.
One of the descendants of Samuel Leigh (kit # 98072) who is a descendant of Ralph Leigh and has the same marker values as Ralph Leigh, was also tested by Ancestry for 46 markers, and close matches to several Lee lines in the eastern United States were discovered. Go to the Clearing House for Leigh & Lee Lines of the I-Haplogroup for details.
