About us

April 18, 2018:  The Sequatchie Valley Condra Family is related to the other colonial American Condra family through the maternal line!  A longstanding mystery appears to have been resolved by FTDNA's Family Finder Test for autosomal DNA Matching.  Kit #809481 belongs to the Y-DNA Condra-Christopher R-5061 lineage.  However this man is an autosomal DNA match with Kit #132357, who belongs to the unrelated Y-DNA Wright-Condra lineage.  They share 41 centimorgans, and fall in the relationship range of 3rd - 5th cousins.  This means that the Sequatchie Valley, TN Condra family descended from James C. Condra (c. 1760-1831) is related to the descendants of Dennis Con[d]ry (d.c. 1735) through the maternal line.  (For background to this mystery, refer to the 12/15/08, 12/05/09, 02/10/14 posts below).

July 19, 2016:  The Condra-Christopher R-Y5058/5061 lineage is so named because of two men surnamed 'Christopher' (Kits 476235 and 476363), who belong to this subgroup.  Both of these men are descended from William Christopher, who was born in Richmond Co VA c. 1712.  William Christopher was born either in the parish bordering the one where Dennis Con[d]ry lived (Wiccomoco), or in any case, no farther than the adjacent county (Richmond Co borders Lancaster Co to the west in the Northern Neck between the Potomac and Rappahannock rivers).  The most obvious explanation is that this results from a non-paternal event, with the shared lineage being original to the Condry males.

July 14 2016:
Under the colorized table under Results, the Red Group represents the haplotype of the Condra family of the Isle of Man, as provided by Kits 441770 and 441852.  Testing was done under the auspices of the Isle of Man DNA Project ('IOM DNA Project') and its Administrator, Mr. John Creer.

This lineage falls under the major R-U106 subclade of R-M269, and specifically downstream under the L47>L48>A1142 subclades of R-U106.  The current terminal snp (July 2020) is R-BY109026.  This is also the paternal lineage of the Cottier (MacOttir) family of the IOM, thus establishing that the Manx Condra and Cottier families descend from the same founding patriarch.  The origin of this lineage in the Middle Ages is Germanic Northwest Europe, and could be consistent with either a Scandinavian or Anglo-Saxon background prior to settlement on the IOM.

This result establishes that the Condra family of the Isle of Man (McCundre/McGillander originating in Andreas and Bride parishes) are not related to the American descendants of Dennis Condry of colonial Virginia nor the Condra families found in Counties Louth and Meath, Ireland (see Project Goals).  Y Chromosome samples have been gathered from men representing practically all (May 2020) of the IOM's historic families.  The IOM DNA Project has shown that these families tend to be interrelated, as expected in a society as small as the Isle of Man, with many families with different surnames sharing the same DNA haplotype, and thus, a common patriarch.  For more information, go to http://www.manxdna.co.uk/.  The absence of matches with participants as a whole in the IOM DNA Project further strengthens the conclusion that the American descendants of Dennis Condry who now go by 'Condra', 'Condrey', 'Condray', do not have a Manx origin.

09/30/15:
Big Y Testing on Kit# 50661 (presumed Dennis Condry descendant) establishes that this haplotype (shared with kit# 154261) bears the Y5058 snp downstream from DF27.  This snp is the marker of the "Breassal Breac" group (refer to entry for 02/13/13).  For detailed snp information and hypotheses on the lineage structure of R-Y5058/Y5061, see www.peterspioneers.com/breassalbreac.htm and http://www.ytree.net/DisplayTree.php?blockID=1508&star=false; and for haplotypes, see www.familytreedna.com/public/BreassalBreac.

02/10/14:
Deep clade testing on Kit #132357 confirms that the haplotype of James C. Condra (d.c. 1831 Marion Co Tn) bears the SRY2627 snp.  This is the snp of documented descendants of Judge John Wright of Prince William/Fauquier Cos VA, thus confirming that James C. Condra and his descendants genetically belong to this particular Wright family via a non-paternal event (see entry for 12/05/09).  See Group 2 and related links on this Table:  http://www.wright-dna.org/dna/R1b1Results.html.

01/14/14:
Kit# 247799 is the haplotype of a descendant of Michael Condra, b.c. 1863, of Drogheda, Co Louth, Ireland.  It is predicted by FTDNA to bear the M-223 snp, and thus fall in the I2b1 haplogroup.  Accordingly, this haplotype does not match any of the other participants to date.  This result, while not dispositive by itself, points to a conclusion that the descendants of Dennis Condry of colonial Virginia are not related to the Condra families found in Counties Louth and Meath, Ireland (see Project Goals).

02/23/13:
The haplotype shared by kit## 50661 and 154261 (presumed Dennis Condry descendants) falls within a subgroup designated as 'p2521', or known informally as the Dwyer/Ryan, or Mulryan DNA group.  This is a R-DF27+ group, the core of which is characterized by men bearing the names Ryan, O'Dwyer, Lee/Leary, and Carroll/McCarville, with origins in southern Ireland.  The men in this group share distinctive markers of CDYa=33, 481=24, and 520=21.  Further research on subclades that might more clearly characterize this group is pending.

02/22/13:  Deep Clade testing on kit# 50661 establishes that the haplotype shared by kit#50661 and kit#154261 are R-DF27+, a major subclade downstream from P-312.

09/15/10: Deep Clade Testing on kit# 50661 indicates that it belongs to haplogroup R1b1b2a1b. This haplotype belongs to the large P-312 (S116) Paragroup, being negative on all downstream snps of P-312 currently tested by FTDNA, including the major U152(S28) and L21(S145) clades.

12/05/09: Kit #152078 is a descendant of James C. Condra (c.1760-1831 Marion Co TN) through his second son, Benjamin (c.1799-1850). These results are a near match with kit # 132357, a descendant of James C. Condra through his fourth son, James Condra, Jr. (b.1806). With matching results from descendants of the second and fourth sons of James C. Condra, we have confirmation that this haplotype is that of James C. Condra. This Western Atlantic Modal Haplotype exactly or closely matches a number of men surnamed Wright, who are descendants of Judge John Wright, who died in Fauquier Co VA in 1792.  Wright FTDNA Kit #38121, a 67/67 match with Condra FTDNA kit #132357, is confirmed for the SR2627/M-167 snp.

08/08/09: Kit #154261 is the haplotype of a Condrey who is descended from Caleb Condrey, born approximately 1771 in Chesterfield Co. VA. and died in 1848 in Iredell Co. NC. Kit #s 50661 and 154261 are a close match.  This man is a 6th or 7th cousin of #50661 (see description under entry for 12/15/08.)

12/15/08: With the results of the second participant in this study, we can now have two distinct male lineages within North American Condras of colonial origin:

Kit #132357 is a descendant of James C. Condra (c.1760-1831) through his fourth son, James C. Condra Jr. (b. 1806).  James C. Condra Sr. was born in Virginia, lived in Barren County, KY, and died in Marion County, TN.  He is the patriarch of the Sequatchie Valley Condra family. This haplotype is the Western Atlantic Modal haplotype and matches closely, at 37-markers, with two men named Wright with presumed origins in colonial Virginia.

Kit #50661, a descendant of John "Elder" Condra (c.1777-1832), who was born in Washington Co VA, lived in Barren Co, KY, and died in Crawford Co IN c 1832. This haplotype is within Haplogroup R1b1b2, confirmed by SNP testing as M-269+. This haplotype has also been found in a descendant of John William Condrey, who was born in 1815 in North Carolina and whose descendants resided in Cleveland, McDowell and Rutherford Counties, NC. The bearer of this haplotype tested with another company and his identity is unknown to the Project Administrator, but on the 27 markers tested in both men, common to both FTDNA and the other company, there is a 26/27 match.

Although kit #132357 and kit #50661 are not paternally related in a genealogically meaningful time frame, their paternal ancestors, James C. Condra and John "Elder" Condra, lived and worked together and presumably regarded each other as close relatives.
