About us

This study aims to determine the extent to which men surnamed 'Condra', 'Condrey', and 'Condray' share a common male genetic lineage by uncovering the Y DNA haplotypes of males who bear the foregoing surnames, as well as possibly related surnames such as 'Condry', 'Connery', and 'Conry'.  In particular, this study seeks to compare the Y DNA profiles of participants who either:

1) can document their origin to the Condra family of colonial Virginia, specifically, the presumed descendants of Dennis Con[d]ry, who died in Lancaster Co VA in 1735, or

2) can document their origin to the Condra family (MacCunneree-'MacGillander'/MacCundre/Cundre) of the Isle of Man, or

3) can document their origin to the Condra family of Counties Louth and Meath, Ireland, or

4) can document their origin to the family of Dennis Condry of Gosport, NH/Newburyport, MA, or

5) are surnamed Connery, Conry, etc., and who can document their origins to Ireland, especially East Munster (Counties Cork, Limerick, Tipperary, and Waterford) and East Ulster (County Down).

2018:

-Remarkably, the results of this study have demonstrated that men named 'Condra', 'Condrey', and 'Condray do not share a single, paternal genealogical origin.  Condra is not a single-origin surname.

-Men named Condra are divided so far into 4 different genetic lineages (See the Colorized Table under Y-DNA Results).  The men in categories 1), 2), and 3), above, are unrelated to each other.

-There is no genetic/genealogical connection between the Condra family of the Isle of Man [Category 2)] and American men who happen to share the same last name who trace their family trees to colonial Virginia [Category 1)].

-Men in category 1) are divided between two of the four lineages.  These two American lineages from the colonial South are the Condra-Christopher lineage and the Wright-Condra lineage, being paternally unrelated.  However, autosomal dna testing via Family Finder confirms that both lineages are related through a maternal line thus confirming family belief that they were one historic kinship group in frontier America.

However, we still need more participants falling into each of the above 5) categories!
