About us

This project explores the paternal lineage of individuals bearing the Beaumont surname, and its variants, using Y-DNA testing to uncover genetic connections, ancestral origins, and migration patterns. Whether you're a seasoned genealogist or just beginning your journey, your participation can help answer key questions: - Do all Beaumont lines descend from a common ancestor? - How many distinct paternal branches exist within the surname? - What are the deep ancestral roots of our surname? - How did our surname evolve and migrate over centuries? We use a combination of STR and SNP testing to group people in genetic clusters. Five to ten testers are needed for each branch to produce reliable and interpretable results. And more are needed for more confident clustering, identification of sub-branches, and estimation of time to the most recent common ancestor across surname variants. Testing resolution is also important. SNP testing: i.e. FTDNA’s Big Y-700, is needed to resolve deeper relationships and define unique branches. Higher testing resolution is needed to map surname evolution, identifying founders of various branches, and building a Haplotree. Participants are encouraged to share their Most Distant Known Ancestor (MDKA) and genealogical records to enrich the analysis. We also take into consideration connections to historical records and ancient haplogroups. Initially, the goal of the was to establish the Haplotree for the male line of the Beaumont family from West Yorkshire, England. This has been accomplished: R-M269, R-L21, and R-BY9003, which is characteristically Brythonic Celt. They also share a familial SNP R-A18420. A summary report is now available for this group: The Medieval Origins of West Yorkshire Beaumonts https://beaumont21.wixsite.com/beaumont-y-dna/post/the-medieval-origins-of-west-yorkshire-beaumonts The surnames delineated in this project include Beaumont, Beamond, Beaman, Beeman, etc. For the surnames Beeman and Beaman, most but NOT all are variations of the surname Beaumont, which mutated upon the arrival of these families in America. Finally, enough individuals have joined the project so that the focus can be expanded to other male Beaumont lines originating in the United Kingdom.
