About us

There are 2 seperate Puterbaugh families. Dan wrote this and it explains it so well.

#1 - A Buterbaugh who has a paper trail to Johann Peter Puterbaugh, the immigrant.

#2 - A Puterbaugh who has a paper trail to George Puterbaugh, the immigrant.

#3 - Me - Dan Puterbaugh who has a paper trail to George Poterbach, b ca 1757.

#4 - A Buterbaugh who has a paper trail to an ancestor, b 1815.

#5 - A Puderbaugh who has a paper trail to George Poterbach, b ca 1757.

#1 & #2 match 35/37, but NOT to the other three.
#3 & #5 match 35/37, but NOT to the other three.
#4 does NOT match any of the others.

Early researchers felt there were only two immigrants - Johann Peter & his brother, George - and anyone with the varied spelling of the surname descended from those two fellows.

We're told that DNA doesn't lie; thus, the DNA results above should be proof that there were more immigrant Puterbaugh/Buterbaugh lines than just Johann Peter & George.

Following is information re the ancestry of #5 and me. Records of the Knowlton, NJ, Presbyterian Church list the baptisms of George Henrich, Joseph, Johannes, Andrew and Joseph. The others are listed in the "History of Monroe County, PA". Reference to this family is also made in "Encyclopedia of PA" by John W. Jordan, LL.D.

George Poterbach, b ca 1757, m Elisa/Elisabetha Barbara Teel. Their sons were:
*1) George Henrich Puterbaugh, b 1777, m Effie Henry
2) Joseph Puterbaugh, b 1778, No further information
**3) Johannes Puderbaugh, b 1780, m Jane Kishpaugh

*1) George Henrich Puterbaugh, b 1777, m Effie Henry.
Their children were:
A) Andrew Puterbaugh, b 1801, m Hannah Honeywell
(MY ANCESTOR)
B) Joseph Puterbaugh, b 1804, m Clarra __?__
C) Elizabeth Puterbaugh, b before 1810 (??)
D) George Puterbaugh, b 1810, m Mary Case Lewis
E) Samuel Puterbaugh, b 1812, m 1) Lydia Kocher
m 2) Susan Kocher
F) John Pewterbaugh, b 1816, m Susan Miller
G) Isaac Puterbaugh, b 1822, m Elizabeth George
H) Margaret Puterbaugh, b 1824, m ____ Card (?)

**3) Johannes Puderbaugh, b 1780, m Jane Kishpaugh
Their known sons were:
A) Jacob Puderbaugh, b 1810, m 1) Sally Ann Jones
m 2) Sarah Patterson
(JACOB IS THE ANCESTOR OF #5 ABOVE)
B) Isaac Puderbaugh, b 1814 - 1817, m four times

We believe there are many folks (in various parts of the nation) whose roots started in New Jersey, those who have thought they descended from the immigrant, Johann Peter. Since the DNA results have disproved this, hopefully, others may be interested in being tested.

The five individuals above have participated in the Bartlebaugh Program.

Dan Puterbaugh

Louie is off on markers 464b and 460. Makes a -2 match to David and Walter's 37 markers.

Still could be 3 brothers but need a paper trail to show a that connection.

Noel Buterbaugh has a match on the first 12 markers with a Puterbaugh. Now the results are in for Glen Puterbaugh and he matches Noel 35/37. This is quite interesting and Puterbaugh research states the founders of line from George and John Peter were half brother and were to have different fathers. Y-DNA looks to me like they had the same father but more people from the Puterbaugh need to test to be sure.
The 3rd Puterbaugh results are 9/12 to Noel and Glen. Could he be the half brother to George and John Peter or another Puterbaugh line from
another place in Germany?

We now are waiting for our 5th Puderbaugh/Puterbaugh/Buterbaugh kit results.
So far only 2 match as family and 2 do not. Puderbaugh/Puterbaugh is a place name and there could be unrelated families with this surname.
