About us

A recent telephone book search turned up 225 Bartlebaugh families (with listed phone numbers) now living in the United States. So 110 of those are in the state of Pennsylvania, and the rest are scattered from the Atlantic to
the Pacific. If you look at the SS death index, you will find only about 150 men and women with the name Bartlebaugh and about 40 Purtlebaughs.
Did you ever wonder why so small a number of people with this name?

The Bartlebaugh family can probably be traced back to one family that started with a name change. From what I have found out so far, I think they came in the middle 1700s. They then branched off into 3 or 4 places in Pa. and some went to Virginia, West Virginia then Ohio.
We have tax records that show a John Bartlebaugh paid taxes in Bedford County, Pa., in 1798
and 1880 census saying John was born in Virginia. Living close by John was a Philip
Bartlebaugh. Philip and a lot of his children stayed in Bedford Co.,(now part of Blair Co.Pa.) while John and family moved a little farther west to Indiana Co.

The number of Bartlebaughs in the Civil War number only about 18 different
men. That number shows a small amount with that name. After the Civil War, they moved even more. We are now finding people researching the other
branches but so far we have not traced anyone back further than 1770s.

There is another clan of Bartlebaughs with origins in the area of Back Creek, near Gore, Frederick County, Virginia. Most branches of this Virginia clan used the spelling Purtlebaugh. However, George Isaak Purtlebaugh signed his name as Bartlebaugh when applying for his second marriage in 1849 and it appears his descendants from the second marriage preferred this spelling.

We have many Buterbaughs that married into the early Bartlebaugh family. The Puterbaugh family was living very close to the Bartlebaughs in Bedford Co. Pa. We want to see if there is a family root connection.
I don't know if anyone noticed but the Indiana Co. Pa Buterbaughs use one t in the spelling of their name but right next door in Clearfield Co. Pa the Butterbaughs use 2 ts.
