The CORBY Family DNA Project was started to find out about our origins and shared ancestry. According to the Dictionary of American Family Names, the Corby surname has three possible origins:
- The English name comes from various places in northern England, i.e. the town of Corby in Northamptonshire.
- The French name comes from the word corb, meaning crow in English.
- The Irish name is a variant of the surname Corboy, from the Gaelic Mac Corrbuidhe (son of Corrbuidhe), derived from corr (‘crane’ ) and buidhe (‘yellow’).

To get the most out of DNA testing, here are some recommendations:
- Males with the Corby surname are required to take a Y-DNA test (preferably Y-DNA67, next best Y-DNA37). It is recommended that they take the Family Finder test (see the description below).
- All others (males and females) are required to take the Family Finder test. The Family Finder test uses DNA from a variety of our ancestral lines and is the only way to find matches with other possible Corby relatives (outside of the Y-DNA test for Corby males).
