About us

There are at least two major groups of Washburns; the New England line and the line from John Washburn b. abt. 1720 in Harrison Co., VA. There is a Canadian branch also, which may have originated in New England.

Haplogroup R1b: Kits 10637,27571, 11747, 11244, 8773, 17008, 16608.

Haplogroup I: Kits 13415, 13304, 15598, 28440, 8720, 8721.

Haplogroup I1b: Kit 20702

The other kits have an indication of haplogroup, but not confirmed.

Where space limits data in most recent ancestor field, Washburn name will be abbreviated W*.

Kits #8720 and #8721 have gateway ancestor of John Washburn, b. 1597 in Eng. but emigrated to America in 1631, died in MA in 1670 but line is traced back to Roger Washbourne, b. abt. 1227 in England.

Several of the kits submitted do not have their earliest known Washburn with date and place. Without this information, we can't see how our lines may be related. Please supply this information to the Group Administrator so the Project Results will be more helpful to all the Washburn who have submitted DNA samples.

Any questions or corrections should be submitted to the Group Administrator.

Summer 2019  I left the above from a previous admin where they referred to old long hand codes for halpogroups.   For example Haplogroup I1b: is now I-P37.

I regrouped them using the new short hand codes for halpogroups to create E, I-M223 I-M253, I-P37, R-M198,  and the larges halpogroup R-M269 now split into 6 groups.

I know very little about Washburn family in general, years ago I research the Bracken County KY Washburn family.  I seen the need to group these different Washburn family to help everyone researching one of them.
