Background

Jews arrived in the region that is today western Ukraine at various times by different routes throughout the diaspora. By the end of the first century CE there were already Jews from the Near East who had settled in the Crimea on the Black Sea. More than a thousand years later beginning in the 13th century, there was a major migration of Ashkenazi Jews eastward from Germany. This migration continued until the Chmielnitski massacres in the mid 17th century. In the 19th century, Jews from the northern part of the Russian Pale moved to Podolia and Kherson gubernias and Bessarabia to settle on agricultural colonies. In addition to migrations there were conversions into the Jewish population, the most well-known being that of the Khazars. Thus, the sources of Jewish population in western Ukraine from whence our ancestors emerged are varied.
