French Swiss DNA Project - Goals

The goal of this project is to compare the DNA of families from the French-speaking part of Switzerland, in order to estimate how closely they are related and to learn about their origins.  The map at
http://www.genealogienetz.de/reg/CH/chspra.jpg shows this area in green.

Eligible people are men whose direct paternal line (father's father's father etc.) (1) lived in the French-speaking part of Switzerland, and (2) has a surname that held citizenship in a French-Swiss community before 1800 according to the Register of Swiss Surnames at
http://www.hls-dhs-dss.ch/famn/index.php?lg=e

Women, and men whose French Swiss ancestry is from non-paternal lines, may participate by recruiting a male relative who meets the criteria above, to supply a DNA sample.
