French Swiss DNA Project - Goals

The goal of this project is to compare the DNA of families from the French-speaking part of Switzerland, in order to estimate how closely they are related and to learn about their origins.  The map at shows this area in green.

Eligible people are men whose direct paternal line (father's father's father etc.) (1) lived in the French-speaking part of Switzerland, and (2) had a surname that held citizenship in a French-Swiss community before 1800 according to the Register of Swiss Surnames at

Women, and men whose French Swiss ancestry is from non-paternal lines, may participate by recruiting a male relative who meets the criteria above, to supply a DNA sample.
