About us

Welcome to the Brimer / Brymer worldwide DNA project. We welcome any males with the surnames Brimer, Brymer, Braboner, Brebner, Bremner,  Brymner, Braimer and other variations. The project was started in August 2015 with the aim of finding the origins of the surname and whether all the branches can be linked by using a combination of traditional genealogical techniques and DNA analysis.

There are currently around only 4000 people bearing the surnames Brimer and Brymer worldwide and of these about half will be female. This gives a relatively small pool for testing - so every sample is important!

The DNA project is being run alongside a Brimer / Brymer one name study. The results of the ongoing research will be published on the projects blog:

The DNA project is open to every male with any variant of the surname. It is recommended that a Y-DNA test of 37 or more markers is ordered as this will give more information and allow the different family groups to be identified.

The Y-DNA test tells you about your paternal line i.e. your father, your father's father, your father's father's father etc. You must be male to take the test and you should have one of the surnames shown or believe that you have a Brimer or Brymer in your direct male line even though you have a different surname. If you are a female please find a male in your family tree to take part if at all possible.

You are also welcome to join the project if you have taken an autosomal test and are related to someone bearing any of the project surnames. This could help link families where there are no longer any male name bearers surviving.
