About us
Many books have been written about various Wofford ancestors. Various Woffords (assorted spellings) served in the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. Wofford College was named for a Wofford ancestor, Reverend Benjamin Wofford.
One prominent genealogy of the Woffords is Of Whom I came; From Whence I Came - Wells-Wise, Rish-Wise and Otherwise, Volume VIII, Part I by Zelma Wells Price, Greenville, Mississippi, published in July 1964. Ms. Price has gathered genealogies from multiple sources into 1 document. Interestingly, her book discusses the Woffords who came early to the United States, but their birth countries have never been proven. Both England and Scotland have been proposed.
Another prominent genealogy is History of the Wofford Family: Direct Descendants of Captain Joseph Wofford” by Carrie Wofford Floyd and John W. Wofford, published in 1928.
It is my hope, as the administrator of this project, that we can use Y-DNA to connect various Wofford lineages and provide more insight into the countries where the Woffords originated.
Sincerely, Michele Cantley (project administrator)
P.S. For full disclosure, I am not a Wofford. My husband is a Wofford on his mother’s side. In researching his mother’s lines, I learned there is much work to do to document and connect the Wofford lineages.
