About us

Welcome to the y-DNA project for the surname Weisel and it's variant spellings. This project is open to males with the Weisel surname and it's variant spellings.

The goal for this project is to determine the number of genetically distinct "Weisel" family groups.  Weisel/Weissel is an uncommon German surname. An early recorded instance of the Weisel surname is for Nicolas and Werner Weisel, 1308, in Friedberg, Hessen.  In more recent times, 1600-1800, there exist at least three known populations:

  1) Descendants of Michael Weisel who arrived in 1732 and settled in Pennsylvania.  Four sons of Michael -- Frederick, Michael, Jacob, and George are known to have many living male descendants.
Michael's "eldest son" Frederick Weisel/Wisely/Wiseley relocated to Wythe Co., Virginia.  Frederick and his wife Sybilla Koehler had 8 children.  Seeking 2-3 Wisely male descendants to confirm a match with the Y-DNA results of his brothers Michael and George Weisel

  2) Descendents of Johann Daniel Weisel (1619-1694) who lived in Muschenheim, Hessen, Germany.  Three sons of Joh. Daniel -- Caspar, Peter Eberhard, and Niclas are known to have many living descendents.  In addition to the Joh. Daniel line, there also existed another population of Weisels living a short distance from Muschenheim (and Nieder-Weisel) in the villages of Maibach and Fauerbach.  Some of these Weisels immigrated in the mid 1800's to Australia.

  3) Bavaria has still today a population of Weisels.  It's likely there were Bavarian Weisel's who immigrated to the United States in the mid 1800s.  There has been no known published genealogical research or historical records for this Weisel group.

Where there is a scarcity of records that can identify and trace family origins back to Europe to the 1600s and earlier, testing the y-chromosome may provide answers to origins both historical and ancient.
