About us
So far there are two known major progenitors of Van Etten lines. This project is researching these specific lines and probably many more which have yet to be identified:
1. Jacob Jansen de Lange (later van Etten), born 1632 in Etten, North Brabant, Netherlands.
Haplogroup: R-M198.
Several members of this project find Jacob as a common ancestor in their genealogical paper research. All of these project members have matching Y-DNA which confirms Jacob was a common ancestor and establish Y-DNA markers for all Y-chromosome descendants of Jacob. If you descend from Jacob Jansen van Etten, please be sure to read the classic scholarly book by Eva Alice Scott: Jacobus Jansen van Etten : some ten generations in America of Jacobus Jansen van Etten, immigrant, from Etten, North Brabent, Holland to Kingston, New York about 1663.It is available for free on the Internet Archive, here: https://archive.org/details/jacobusjansenvan00scot/mode/2up

2. Christopher Phernetton aka Van Etten, born about 1796 Canada.
Haplogroup: R-M269.
Christopher's father was a Van Netten born in the Netherlands. Some of Christopher's descendants kept the Van Netten name or some variant. One member of this surname project is a direct patrilineal descendant of Christopher Phernetton. This member's Y-111 results establish STR markers for Christopher's Y-chromosome descendants, and we hope will help researchers of this family connect to descendants of earlier Van Etten ancestors in the near future.

3. Others: This project also has two Van Etten surnamed members without a genetic match to any other Van Etten lineage in this project. They are both in Haplogroup R-M269.
If you know you are a direct patrilineal Y-chromosome descendant of any Van Etten variant ancestor, please join the project and take the Y-DNA test!
