About us

The VA-1600mtDNA project is established to focus on the early Virginia families. This project is for Maternal (mtDNA) participants. We welcome all direct line descendants who trace their maternal line back to Virginia in the 1600s. (There is a separate project for Paternal (yDNA) ancestry.

APPLICANT MUST BE ABLE TO DOCUMENT ANCESTOR'S RESIDENCE IN ORIGINAL VIRGINIA SHIRES PRIOR TO 1700 - and MUST PROVIDE THE MATERNAL LINE (mothers mother's ... mother's line) FROM THE PERSON BEING TESTED TO THE FEMALE ANCESTOR WHO LIVED IN VIRGINIA PRIOR TO 1700. IF YOU CANNOT DO THIS, PLEASE DO NOT REQUEST TO JOIN!.

The area included is made up of the eight original Shires (counties):

Accawmack (Northampton), Charles City, Charles River (York), Elizabeth City, Henrico, James City, Warrosquyoake (Isle of Wight) and Warwick River (Warwick). Also included is Chickacoan District (Northumberland). Daughter counties are Gloucester, Lancaster, New Kent, Surry, Westmoreland, Accomack, Stafford, Middlesex, New Norfolk, Upper Norfolk, Lower Norfolk, Norfolk, Nansemond, Princess Ann, King and Queen, Essex, and Richmond.



The time period is the 1600s (17th Century).
