About us
The Tryon Surname Project is open to all who are interested in working together to find their common heritage through sharing of information and DNA testing. All spelling variations are welcome.
The Tryon Surname Project is primarily a Y-DNA project as is typical of a One Name Study. There are currently 17 family members who have tested to at least the Y-37 level. Ten have documentation and genetics that link them to William Tryon of Wethersfield, CT, (1646-1711), four with documentation that gets them close to William and DNA results that support that ancestor, one Tryon of England, who appears to be not related, a member of an old Pennsylvania family, some of whom adopted the Tryon name but were originally Treons of Alsace, also unrelated, and one with surname Tryon but without similar genetics, thought to be the descendant of an unreported adoption by a Tryon family about five generations earlier.
In 2023, the project started testing using BigY-700 on thirteen members descended from William. The goal is to begin to define genetic lineages from William which can be used to fit testers with documentary "brick walls" into the lineage of Tryons. Those analyses are finished and we are all currently in haplogroup R-FTD91363 and share 17 novel variants with each of us having additional variants unique to that individual. This proves a common ancestor born at about 1650. Some subsets of us share additional variants indicating we are more closely related to each other than to the others. Those follow the lineages of sons, grandsons, etc. of William. The work has broken through a few brick walls, confirmed some hypothesized family links, and completely redefined one line. If you are a male with surname Tryon, please join our project and get tested.
