About us

Please do consider joining the Trethewey DNA Project. The more people who take part, the better the chances of finding matches and adding to our knowledge of the Trethewey family.

Nov 2025

Eight of the fourteen men with the Trethewey surname who have taken a Y-DNA test have now upgraded to Big Y-700. The results are proving to be very interesting, as you can see by looking at the Trethewy DNA Project Group Time Tree.

Of particular significance are the close DNA ties between descendants of Group 9 and Group 4, as a link has not previously been possible to find using documentary sources. However, the two Group 1 descendants who have tested are linked according to documentary evidence, but DNA results show otherwise. More testers are needed in order to help resolve some of the questions which have arisen.

The Group Time Tree also shows roughly when other Big Y-700 testers in the Trethewy DNA Project may tie in, even though the tester may not have the surname ‘Trethewey’. Other members of the Trethewy DNA Project, both male and female, have found that the Family Finder test has helped them to discover their Trethewey relatives.

Dec 2024

Twelve men with the Trethewey surname have now taken a Y-DNA test with at least 37 markers. Five of these have now upgraded to Big Y-700 and had their results back. A new Big Y-700 Trethewey tester is now awaiting their results.

Two other men with different surnames have also upgraded to the Big Y-700 test and their connection can be seen in the Group Time Tree roughly between 2000 BCE and 3000BCE.

July 2020

The Trethewy One-Name Study now has a new website which you can find at https://trethewy.one-name.net/ which is linked to this Family Tree Trethewy DNA Project.

April 2018

Results from new project members have resulted in some very interesting developments. Some previously accepted family trees will need to be reviewed and the sources re-examined. This is a very exciting challenge, particularly given the frequency of the names Richard, Thomas, William and John in so many of the Trethewey families!

June 2016

Following the death of Alan Kent in 2015, the Trethewy Society has now been taken on by Raymond Trethewey and Sally Whiffing. Raymond has become a co-administrator of the Trethewey DNA Project, and the Trethewy One-Name Study continues to be registered with the Guild of One-Name Studies.

March 2013

This project was set up in July 2012.  The late Alan Kent (who established and ran the Trethewy Society) became a collaborator with this project in March 2013, which then enabled this project to display the Guild of One-Name Studies logo.

The first results can now be seen. It would be particularly interesting to get results back from some of the other main family groups, which will help to confirm paper records and perhaps establish links between different groups.
