The TOWNSEND SOCIETY OF AMERICA, a sixty-year-old surname genealogical research organization based on Long Island, New York manages the TOWNSEND DNA Project.
The project is open to anyone interested in the TOWNSEND (of any spelling and from any country) surname.
Male Townsends should consider a YDNA test that tracks the male line back for many generations and the results will identify a Townsend family group. The original focus of the Townsend project was YDNA.
Males and females off any surname might consider autosomal (Family Finder) or mtDNA tests. Family Finder is great for finding cousins as this type of DNA come 1/2 from each parent, 1/4 from grandparent (and on back). mtDNA is passed down from mothers to both male and female children.
