About us

The surname MacTaggart or Taggart, with all of it's great variety of spellings, is derived from the Gaelic Mac-an-t'Saigart, and is most commonly translated as son of the coarb or son of the priest, from the historic period prior to the widespread adoption of celibacy by the Celtic Church. The name has been closely associated with Clan Ross in Scotland, & is widespread throughout Ireland, but especially in Ulster. The  surname has been adopted by many, many different families for many different reasons, but all are consistent with origins in the British Isles. The project was initiated simply as a result of a single DNA test result for the surname Tagert, which is why the website address still ends with a reference to that particular spelling. I welcome any & all suggestions & greatly appreciate any input from participants & prospective participants. Our surname has a moderately small distribution in the British Isles, and all of the former British Colonies, and is represented in all of those nations.
