Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is a surname project?
A surname project attempts to trace the genealogical lineage of project participants having similar surnames (eg, Sturdevant, Sturtevant, Sturdivant).
2. What DNA testing is required?
A Y-DNA test is required of male participants. Females may participant by taking a mtDNA test.
3. What information is published?
DNA Results (haplotypes) of each participant will be published; group analysis of male haplotypes is provided. Female haplotypes are published for use by the participant; group analysis is not provided. In addition, some administrative information is published such as kit number. Personal information is not published.
4. May I join the STURDEVANT Surname Project?
Yes, If you are a male or female with STURDEVANT surname. If you are not a STURDEVANT, there is no advantage to membership because the general public has access to the published project.
5 What is a non-participating member?
A non-participating member is a tested member who IS NOT a STURDEVANT but is interested in the associated genealogy.
6. I am a female, may I join the STURDEVANT Surname Project?
Yes, but there will be little if any direct benefit since you already have public access.
7. What is a haplotype?
A haplotype is the ordered sequence of markers tested (Y-DNA or mtDNA).
