About us

The Stratton surname (and spelling variants) does not have a single origin; the most common seems to be a combination of the Old English words for street and town. The most frequently-observed ancestry for people with this surname is British & Irish (about 53%) followed by French & German (about 25%) and Scandinavian (about 5%).

Participating in this project offers an opportunity to uncover information not provided by paper records that might help your family history research. We can discern which family trees are related. As the project progresses, results for family trees will provide information about the evolution of the surname.

Y DNA tests identify your direct male line (your father, his father, and so on back in time). Only males can take this test. If you believe there is a Stratton (or a spelling variant) in your male line, although you have a different surname, you are also welcome to participate. If you are female, you will need to find a male in your family to participate and represent your tree.

We encourage males to order a Y-DNA test for more than 37 markers, if practical. (More markers = more information.) Upgrades are available after ordering fewer markers though the total cost will ultimately be more.

Those interested interested in learning about their female line (your mother, her mother and so on back in time) should consider ordering a mtDNA test. (For matches in a genealogical time frame, order the mtDNA Plus test.) Everyone inherits mtDNA from their mother; only females pass it on.

DNA test results contain no personal information. Matches are only with those to whom you are related. This is an opportunity to learn more about your origins and ancestry.
