About us

The Steeves DNA Project hopes to link descendants of Heinrich Stief and Regina Stahlecker through their DNA.

There are three types of DNA tests that can be used to join the project:

  • Y-DNA is taken by men and follows their Steeves line directly. Steeves men are encouraged to test at least 37 or 67 markers. Of course, we’re always thrilled when men opt for 111 markers or Big Y testing.
  • mtDNA traces the female line. Unfortunately, since Heinrich and Regina had only sons, we will not have access to Regina’s DNA without a candidate from Regina’s family who has a direct female line. If you are a direct female descendant of one of the seven sons of Heinrich and Regina, please join the project and also notify an administrator of your relationship. We're happy to have you and your tests will help to identify the mitochondrial DNA of the seven daughters-in-law of Heinrich and Regina.
  • Autosomal DNA is passed down from both parents to all of their children. Since many of us are 8-10 or more generations from Heinrich and Regina, we are pushing the limits of this type of DNA test but large family groups like the Steeves are perfect to help overcome these limits and test the boundaries of autosomal DNA testing. We welcome all descendants of Heinrich and Regina.

Please upload a Gedcom file of your family tree if you have one. This will help us to identify the DNA that belongs to our common ancestors. Thank you for participating.
