About us

The Sparkman DNA project is a cooperation among numerous researchers of the family in America who have long been exchanging information and who seek to prove or disprove long-held beliefs that these cousins descend from a common ancestor, John Sparkman d. 1729, Chowan (Gates) Co., NC, which they cannot otherwise prove due to the lack of extant paper records. The ancestry of John d. 1729 is also our brick wall, and we invite Sparkmans internationally, particularly from Britain and Australia, to participate and will be happy to incorporate any of your project objectives.

If you descend from a Sparkman line, participating in this DNA project could help your research considerably and provide some much needed proof and direction for further research. The tests are done on the Y-chromosome which is passed from father to son, and he to his son, etc., thus participants must be male and must have the SPARKMAN surname all the way down the line. If you are a female and wish to have your line participate in the Project, a male cousin, uncle, brother, etc., can provide the DNA for your line.

If you are interested in joining our DNA study, please contact the Project Administrator (above) for additional information or simply order a test kit and email the Project Administrator with your known and believed descent. We have obtained a group rate. We are encouraging the Y-DNA37: 37 Marker paternal test as it will potentially enable us to narrow down the number of generations to the participants' common ancester, but please feel free to order the Y-DNA test best suited to your personal objectives. Upgrades can be made at a later date. No vital body parts are required - just a simple swab of the inside of the cheek. Results are available in about 60 days.
