About us

Many Sonnenberg and Sonnenburg lineages have been found to trace back to Germany, Prussia and Poland, particularly in Brandenburg, Pommern/Pomerania, Posen/Poznan, Lodz and Masovian Voivodeships, among others.

One possible point of origin of the surname Sonnenburg could be the modern Polish town of Słońsk, a village in Sulęcin County of the Lubusz Voivodeship, in western Poland. Formerly known as Sonnenburg in German, this town first appeared in documents in 1295. It was part of Lubusz land of the Kingdom of Poland, then from 1312 within the German Margraviate of Brandenburg. From 1373 to 1415 it was part of the Bohemian crown.  In the 18th century it became part of Prussia, and from 1871-1945 part of Germany, and is now part of Poland following WW2.
