About us
A Surname Project traces members of a family that share a common surname. These projects are of the most interest in cultures where surnames are passed on from father to son - in the same manner that the Y-Chromosome is inherited. The SNAVELY-SNIVELY project, therefore, is intended for males who wish to learn about their direct paternal (father's father's father's...) line through Y-DNA testing (please note: as females do not carry their father's Y-DNA, women who would like to investigate their father's direct paternal line should have a male relative bearing her father’s surname order a Y-DNA test).
Requirements and Testing
If you have not yet tested, it is recommended that you begin with an STR marker test from FTDNA (Y-DNA12, Y-DNA37, Y-DNA67, or Y-DNA111) to help you identify those in the project most similar to you. Alternatively, you can start by taking the National Geographic Geonographic Project’s Geno 2.0 test and, upon receiving your results, transfer them to FTDNA and then join this project. The Administrator can assist you afterwards in identifying a further testing strategy that will aid you in locating your position on the Y-DNA SNP haplotree and your relationship to others in the project. When requesting to join this project, please also send a summary of your paternal line, as best you know it (father, grandfather, great grandfather etc.), with approximate birth dates and locations, which will be compared with others in the project.
Thanks!
