The SMOTHERMAN Surname DNA Project seeks to sort all the Smotherman (and spelling variants) men in the world into groups based on their Y DNA. The data therefrom can then be used to further knowledge regarding genealogical and ethnographic origins.

Furthermore, since many branches of the original American immigrant Samuel Smotherman will be tested, DNA will be used to identify the substructure of his descent tree, so that persons who match his DNA can find their particular descent path from him.
