About us

Looking for a “New England” direct male descendant of John Sutton (1593-1672).

For a number of years, serious genealogical researchers of Sitton family members who resided in North Carolina during the 1700s, have believed they are the descendants of a John Sutton (born about 1593 in England and died in 1672 in Rehoboth, Bristol, Massachusetts) who arrived in Scituate, Massachusetts in 1638 on the Diligent of Ipswich, through his great grandson, John Sitton (1700) who married Elizabeth Pindell and lived in Prince George County, Maryland in the mid-1700s.

To date, the Sitton Families of NC, 1700s project has established the genetic relationships through Y-chromosome tests  between descendants of the three Sitton men, Joseph (born about 1745), John (born about 1763), and Phillip (born about 1770), who lived in North Carolina in the 1700s and are believed by many Sitton researchers to be the son and grandsons of John Sitton (1700) of Maryland.  Other researchers, however, believe the Sittons of North Carolina are not related to the New England line of Sutton/Sittons.  In order to establish the link back to the New England line of descendants of John Sutton (1593-1672), we would like to test the Y-DNA of a known descendant of John Sutton (1593-1672) whose lineage does not run through John Sitton (1700), to compare to the test results of direct male descendants of the North Carolina Sittons.

John Sutton (1593-1672) is believed to have had only one son, John Sutton, Jr., who was born about 1620 in England and died about 1691 in Scituate, Massachusetts.  He married Elizabeth House about 1661 and is believed to have had four sons, whose births are recorded in the Massachusetts Town Records.  We are looking for direct male descendants of these four sons:

1. John Sutton III, born in 1663 in Scituate, Massachusetts, married Abigail Clark. This John Sutton is believed to have had two sons, John Sutton IV, born 1695 and Seth Sutton, born 1707.

2.  Benjamin Sitton/Sutton, born in 1674 in Scituate, Massachusetts, married Lydia [Kibbe] is the father of John Sitton (1700) of Maryland and two other sons, Benjamin Sitton Jr., born in 1694, married Sarah Bush and died in 1731, and Christopher Sitton, born in 1697, died in 1729.  As noted above, we are not seeking additional descendants of his son John Sitton (1700),  but would be very interested in tests of either of Benjamin Sitton’s other sons, Benjamin Jr. or Christopher. Benjamin Sitton and some of his children lived in Connecticut as well as Massachusetts and are believed to be the first descendants of John Sutton (1593-1672) to use the surname Sitton instead of Sutton.

3.  Nathaniel Sutton, born 1676 in Scituate, Massachusetts, married Mary or Margaret Ray.  Nathaniel Sutton is believed to have had three sons, Benjamin Sutton, Ray Sutton, and Nathaniel Sutton Jr.

4.  Nathan Sutton, born 1679 in Scituate, Massachusetts.  Marriage and descendants unknown.

If you believe that you may be a direct male descendant of any of these men, please contact the project administrator for further information.  If you are uncertain, we may be able to use information already collected to help verify lineage.  The surname may be Sutton or Sitton.

The project will pay for a Y-chromosome test for a documented descendant of one of these “New England” descendants of John Sutton (1593-1672).  The Y-chromosome test will provide an opportunity for descendants of John Sutton to confirm their relationships and possible origins.  Again, we are not looking for any additional descendants whose line goes through John Sitton (1700) of Maryland.
