Boruch (Barnett) Shavinsky, was born in Kobrin, Russia (now Belarus) in 1841. He came to the United States in 1888 and settled in New York City. Later he emigrated to Jerusalem where he died about 1917. His descendants remained in the USA and adopted the surname Shevin. There were other Shavinsky/Shevinsky families who lived in Drohichyn, which is about 25 miles east of Kobrin.
Mayer Shavinsky was born about 1873 in what is now Belarus, possibly in Kobrin. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1902 with his wife Rose and their first two children. They were living in Jamesburg, New Jersey in 1910. Mayer died in 1945. One of his descendants has joined our project.
Aaron Shavinsky (1903-1962) came to the USA stopping first in Augusta, Georgia. Aaron eventually made his home in Miami, Florida. His father's name was Samuel.
There are other families with the name Shavinsky or Shevin who settled in Chicago, Philadelphia, Georgia, Alabama, and other states. Their relationships, if any, are unknown at this time.
