The surname
Ruthven was banned in Britain for at least 40 years from 1600 and therefore many
descendants of the various Ruthven lineages, have used various different surnames
over the past 420 years. Therefore any member of FTDNA who matches males of the
surnames RUTHVEN, RUFFIN or TROTTER, are most welcome to join our DNA Project.

We have project members living in many different countries: as well as  Ruffin males from the
United states where the surname was believed to have changed from Ruthven to Ruffin.

For the purposes of the Ruthven DNA project the father line Y-DNA test is used to trace the
direct paternal line; that is, your father, your father's father, your father's father's father, and so
on back in time. To participate in the test you should therefore be a male with one of the
surnames shown. If you believe there is a Ruthven/or Ruffin or variant in your direct male line,
although you have a different surname, you are also welcome to participate. If you are female,
you will need to ask your Ruthven brother, father, uncle, cousin or other male relative to order on
your behalf.Members should order the 37- to Y67 to Y111 marker test which is usually sufficient
to confirm matches within a genealogical time-frame .  Females as well as males are also welcome
to order the Family Finder Autosomal DNA test for themselves which does not trace the father-line
exclusively, but does however find relatives matching you from all lines in your family tree going
back in time to approximately 4 or 5 generations.

TO ORDER A KIT click on the "Join Request" tab at the top of this page.

If you have already had your DNA tested with Family Tree DNA as part of a geographical project
or another surname project you are welcome to join this project too. There is no extra charge
for joining multiple projects. Simply click on the "Request to join this project" button at the top
left, enter your kit number and password and your results will automatically be included in this
project as well. If you have a test result from Ancestry / 23&Me or MyHeritage you are most
welcome to transfer the autosomal DNA test result to Family Tree DNA for free.

If you have already tested with the Genographic Project you can also join this project at no
extra charge. Simply log in to your Genographic Project page, go to the section "What else
can I do with my results", click on "Learn more" and follow the instructions.
