About us

Robillard/de Robillard is an Ancient and Noble family found throughout all regions of France documented back to the 12th century. The ancestors of most North American descendants are Claude Robillard (1650-1719) and Marie Grandin (1651-1708). Claude was a young man at 13 when he arrived in Quebec and likewise Marie was 13, but in addition she was a Daughter of the King. The first attempt to settle Quebec failed when Champlain was forced to surrender to the Kirke brothers in 1627 and most of the French returned home, never to come back to Canada. However, when France once again claimed possession of the post in 1634, there was a renewed interest, and the first "real" settling began. Claude and Marie were part of this migration. Starting in 1634, Robert Giffard was given the seigneurie of Beauport, becoming Québec's first colonization seigneurie. He was from the region of Perche Normandy, so the bulk of his recruiting came from that locality. It’s estimated that 20% of the first 8500 settlers to New France were Normans from Normandy. The parents of Claude have never been identified, yet House Robillard was not an obscure family in France with many branches established in all parts. With Fiefs, Castles, lords, and Knights, this project will attempt to track some fascinating family legacy from Medieval France all the way to the period when Claude departs for New France.
