About us

“Rabago” is an interesting surname, and it is relatively unique. My branch of the Rabago patrilineal line goes back, through time and place, to Texas, a few municipalities in Coahuila & Jalisco, Mexico, and all the way to the northern part of Cantabria in 17th century Spain (so far). This is a tiny piece of the puzzle, however. I've read about great members (and of course some who were not so great!) of the Rabago family, doing and being a part of amazing endeavors. Some were members of the prestigious Order of Santiago. One was even a confessor to the king of Spain!

Like most “surname projects,” one of the goals in this group is to help genealogically link the Rabago family tree together, from branches all around the world. With the internet, historical records, and now DNA, we have a fantastic opportunity to unite under this common lineage, and bring this “tree“ to fruition. Since you're here, there's a good chance that you share that goal.

Another objective that this group has been designed for, and has a large emphasis on, is the “family” part of the family tree. All people, households, clans, etc. have a narrative in history. Why did our ancestors choose (if they did) to leave their native homeland? What struggles did their specific era place upon them? What were the adventures like, traveling the sea and emigrating to foreign lands? Some of our ancestors were in a class of nobility (one could not be in the Orden de Santiago without noble blood, among a myriad of other requirements). How did their engagements differ from those in the lower rungs of society? Communicating and sharing information with each other is one way to peer into the past, but another will be collaborating with historical organizations who are amicable to contributing to our pursuit.

How can you help the project? That question has clearly been on your mind. Ha ha. Creating a family tree, and making it available to be viewed, would be an enormous help. If you can go even two generations back, one of our admins (or another member) can likely assist in filling in some blanks and helping it expand. If you can contribute to the General Fund, it will primarily go to helping our family members obtain kits, depending on the amount of donations received. Getting additional family, with DNA links to the Rabago line, will increase our pool of data exponentially. Those going through group projects can also get certain discounts on tests, so feel free to message an admin about any specials that may be going on. Having written all of this, it is important to note that many of us don’t have much time or money. None of the requests above are at all mandatory. Any type of participation at all, from a comment on the page, to recruiting one thousand new members, will be greatly appreciated. Welcome aboard!

Sincerely,

Daniel Cason,

Administrator of the Rabago Surname Project
