Himod-Káposztásföldek site
The Himod-Káposztásföldek site (referred to as Himod) is located east of the historic Amber Road, which connected Savaria (modern-day Szombathely) with Carnuntum (Petronell), near the eastern border of Avaria. It lies about 30 km east of the 9th-century Sopronkehida cemetery.
According to archaeologist Péter Tomka, the Carolingian-period graves at Himod were buried during the first two-thirds of the 9th century CE (referred to as Himod Phase I) and were uncovered within a narrow excavation strip only 7 meters wide.
Himod is one of the few early medieval cemeteries in the Carpathian Basin where later graves from the 10th–11th centuries CE (Himod Phase II) were directly superimposed over earlier 9th-century burials.
Grave KOZ14
One notable burial from the Himod-Káposztásföldek site is Grave 142 (KOZ14), dated to the Carolingian period (Himod Phase I). This grave belonged to a male individual aged 40–49 years (confirmed both anthropologically and genetically) and contained a rich assemblage of grave goods. These included a spearhead, a gilded silver buckle, an iron buckle, an iron belt end, a knife, multiple arrowheads, a pot, and various iron tools, such as fire-making implements and a “Wadenbindengarnitur” (a set of calf bindings likely related to dress or military gear). The presence of both martial and utilitarian items suggests the individual may have held a significant social or military role within his community.
